A digitally trunked radio repeater system provides substantial improvements in timeliness of channel acquisition and channel drop, and in reliability of critical control signalling. The system uses a much higher digital signalling rate than is typically found in prior art systems, and uses a control channel to convey digital channel request and assignment messages between the central site and mobile transceivers. The mobile radio transceivers transmit channel requests on the control channel (if no response is received, the mobile retries during a retry time window which increases in duration in dependence on the number of retries). The mobile transceiver switches to a working channel in response to an assignment message received on the control channel. Subaudible digital signals transmitted on the control channel and on active working channels allow late entry, shifting to higher priority calls, and other advanced functions. Message and transmission trunking capabilities are both present so as to maximize working channel usage without compromising channel access for high priority communications. During transmission trunking, called and calling transceivers return to the control channel after each transmission (and called transceivers may be inhibited from transmitting) but grant higher priority to calls from the other transceivers being communicated with to ensure continuity over an entire conversation. Additional functions and fault tolerant features further increase the versatility and reliability of the system.

An automated transaction system includes a plurality of user cards each issued to a respective user and having a user card microprocessor and a memory incorporated therein for maintaining a history of user account transactions and a user account balance therein, each user card having data output means connected to the user card microprocessor. A plurality of master cards are provided each having master card microprocessor and a memory incorporated therein for maintaining a history of master account transactions and a master account balance therein, each master card having data output means connected to the microprocessor. A plurality of terminals are included, each having first receiving means for receiving any one of the plurality of user cards inserted therein and establishing a connection with the user card data output means, second receiving means for receiving one of the plurality of master cards inserted therein and establishing a connection with the master card data output means, operating means for performing a set of desired terminal functions, and first path means for establishing a data communication path between the user card microprocessor of a user card inserted in the first receiving means and the master card microprocessor of a master card inserted in the second receiving means of the terminal. The user cards and the master cards each have program means for performing an account transfer transaction between a user card and a master card inserted in a terminal wherein value from the account balance of one card is debited and the account balance of the other card is correspondingly credited. Transaction history recording means are provided for receiving a user card or a master card therein and producing a transaction history record of the account transactions stored in the card.

An apparatus for automatically processing an animal carcass. Suspension means suspends the carcass in an inverted position with the spine inclined upwardly towards the neck with the spine located beneath the carcass and so that the diaphragm is approximately vertical. A cutting assembly moves into the abdominal cavity adjacent to the diaphragm, and a cutting means cuts the diaphragm around the periphery. A brisket shearing means cuts the brisket with a shearing action along the brisket from the abdomen and towards the neck end of the brisket. The reaction member is pivotally movable relative to the brisket about a rear end to generally follow the contours of the brisket. Head holding means locates and clamps the head against movement, and stretching means stretches the neck of the carcass so as to spread the atlas joint, and a cutting blade moves along the line of the jaw and through the atlas joint so as to sever the head. Splitting support means is movable lengthwise along the carcass, an opposed pair of rolling or sliding spine tracking means carried by the splitting support means straddles, locates and restrains the spine against lateral movement while cutting means splits the carcass at the tracking means.

31 TITLE METHOD OF MAKING SHAPED CERAMIC COMPOSITES WITH THE USE OF A BARRIER APPLICANT LANXIDE TECHNOLOGY COMPANY, LP INVENTORS Marc S. NEWKIRK - and Robert C. KANINER In the present invention, there is provided a method for producing a self-supporting ceramic body by the oxidation of a parent metal to form a polycrystalline ceramic material consisting essentially of the oxidation reaction product of said parent metal with an oxidant, including a vapor-phase oxidant, and optionally one or more metallic constituents. The method comprises the steps of providing at least a portion of said parent metal with a barrier means at least partially spaced from said parent metal for establishing at least one surface of the ceramic body, and heating said parent metal to a temperature above its melting point but below the melting point of the oxidation reaction product to form a body of molten metal. At that temperature, the molten metal is reacted with the oxidant, thus forming the oxidation reaction product. At least a portion of the oxidation reaction product is maintained in contact with and between the molten metal and oxidant to transport the molten metal through the oxidation reaction product toward the barrier means and into contact with the oxidant so that the oxidation reaction product continues to form at the interface between the oxidant and previously formed oxidation reaction product optionally leaving metal dispersed through the polycrystalline material. The reaction is continued to the barrier means to produce a ceramic body having the surface established by the barrier means. A composite is formed by superimposing a barrier onto a filler material, such as a preform, and infiltrating the filler with the polycrystalline ceramic matrix grown to the barrier means.
